It's been known since last year that Samsung is working on an Apple NameDrop-style tap to share feature for its devices. New information has surfaced which suggests that this feature may be introduced with One UI 9.
Google has been working on a similar feature and it also appears that the company is going to make this a platform-wide feature, meaning that it would be available on most Android devices.
Feature may not arrive until One UI 9
AndroidAuthority has found references to this new “Tap to share” feature in leaked One UI 9 builds. “Just hold the top of your phone close to the device, and the files will be sent,” explains the feature's description.
This highlights that the feature will use NFC to transfer files between devices. It will be used to share contact information like NameDrop but also for file transfers, with this feature likely going to be baked into Quick Share.
Reference to a Tap To Share feature have also been discovered in Android 17 beta and Canary builds. This suggests that Google is building the feature into the OS itself, so it's likely that we'll see it on a lot more Android brands than just Galaxy and Pixel.
Google may not formally launch this feature until the stable version of Android 17 is released. This also suggests that Samsung may keep quiet on the matter until it's ready to launch the One UI 9 beta program.
